Modernization Supports Medicare Program Integrity

Case Study
CMS actively seeks to reduce and mitigate improper payments. Within the Medicare Fee-For-Service program, CMS employs Review Contractors (RCS) to measure, prevent, identify, and correct improper payments. CMS looks to Unissant to modernize and re-architect its Electronic Submission of Medical Documentation (esMD) system, which allows RCs and providers, through Health Information Handler (HIH) organizations to share medical documentation electronically instead of via letter of fax.

Unissant provides full lifecycle support for esMD, including systems modernization and enhancements, operations and maintenance, help desk support and hosting support, all using agile methodologies. By re-architecting components to microservices and API-based architectures, we empower access to timely and relevant documentation. In this way, we support CMS and their contractors as they seek to reduce improper medical payments, expedite processing of information, and improve efficiency and quality of data and document sharing. Providers benefit from 60% faster payments when sharing documentation electronically with RCs and HIHs through esMD compared to manual, paper-based processes.
